Let's talk body moisturizers

How many of you choose a moisturizer based off of its smell over its ingredients? I know I used to. My favorite was the Mango Body Butter from one of my favorite "natural" stores. Did you know that most of the moisturizers on the market today (even the ones that claim to be "all natural") will include artificial ingredients or chemicals in them which can strip the skin of its natural oils?

Many of the lotions that we use on our bodies also list water as their first ingredient. I used to always think this was a really great thing! I mean, it's water...how much more pure can you get? The problem with adding water to any so called “moisturizer” is that they will contain ingredients like preservatives, stabilizers and emulsifiers to help them last longer, smell better, etc. Water is not a strong enough ingredient to keep your skin moisturized by itself. In fact, when you apply a water-based lotion onto your skin, only some of the lotion penetrates and hydrates the skin, while the rest evaporates. In order to lock the moisture into your skin, a water-based lotion needs to have some help from water loving ingredients. Humectants, which are ingredients that help draw water into the skin, include glycerin and hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is amazing because it can hold up to 1000x its weight in water and is used in quite a bit of products. Emollients are used to help nourish the skin and keep it feeling smooth. Some of my favorite and commonly used emollients would be jojoba oil and sunflower oil. If a water-based moisturizer is something you prefer, make sure they include those types of ingredients as well so you know that the moisture is being locked into your skin and providing the benefits you need.

Now, my favorite type of body moisturizer to use is an oil-based lotion bar or a body whip. These two products typically include ingredients such as jojoba oil, shea butter, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil. All are super hydrating and really help someone with dry, even dehydrated skin.

I started using a Body Lotion Bar that contains all of those ingredients plus more things like beeswax and essential oils. I love this stuff because it makes my skin look and feel so soft and super hydrated! No more flaky, scaly, sad looking skin. It's even helped out the eczema breakout I was having on my hands and my

hands actually look beautiful again. The plus is this Body Lotion Bar smells so good thanks to the blend of essential oils in it...I've gone from needing highly perfumed products, to really enjoying the natural scents from this line that is also hydrating my skin the way it needed to be hydrated.

What body lotion are you currently using? How does it make your skin feel? I encourage you to research a little more on the ingredients that are in your current body lotion. What do you see?
